About Ruth & My Yoga Club

Hello I’m Ruth and this is My Yoga Club, well actually it’s Your Yoga Club, after all it’s here for you. But first let me tell you how it all began…
I had my first taste of Yoga 2004. Too afraid to go to a class, I bought DVDs and stayed indoors. Years later I plucked up the courage to attend a class.
Although I attended these religiously, the Fitness or Traditional Yoga classes didn’t sit well with me. I took the plunge, became a Yoga Teacher and blended the concepts.
In 2014 My Yoga Club was born. Working hard to parcel up the best of Yoga, Fitness, Bio-mechanics, Meditation and more, I created a class to make you fitter, connect with your body, and help you learn to accept yourself.

About Yoga

What is Yoga? I hear you cry…..or maybe you already have preconceived ideas about what you think Yoga is?  So here’s a bit of information about where Yoga comes from and why its a fantastic form of exercise for the whole body (including the mind)

Yoga is an ancient tradition stemming back some 4000 years. Yoga is the physical, mental, and spiritual practices or disciplines which originated in ancient India with a view to attain a state of permanent peace of mind in order to experience one's true self.  The term Yoga can be derived from either of two roots, yujir yoga (to yoke) or yuj samādhau (to concentrate).  There are many different styles of Yoga and many different schools of thought on how it should be practiced each correct in their own merit.  From Bikram (Hot Yoga) to Hatha and Ashtanga to Vinyasa there are many many styles to choose from.  I could wax lyrical here but Yoga is a personal discovery and one that I will leave for the individual to seek out their path.  After all what else is Google for?.  Many (including myself) will choose Yoga initially as a form of exercise, something to keep the body fit and supple, once on this path some will choose to travel the path further and find out more about Yoga and what it can do for them.   The Yoga trail  is well travelled and there are a myriad of different routes to take and for some stopping at the first destination is enough.

Yoga is a great form of exercise for beginners as well as the hardened fitness fanatic.  Every Yoga pose is able to be modified or adapted to make it accessible to all, whatever your age or fitness level.  Most people’s fears about starting Yoga stem from thinking they will not be able to contort their body into the required shape.  This is not what Yoga is about.  Yoga is about breath and as we can all breathe we are therefore all equipped with the tools to start Yoga.  I know that sounds very mystic and airy fairy but I would say to everyone don’t knock it until you’ve tried it .  I do not know anyone who embarked on Yoga and was able to do all the poses straight away.  I too am still a student of Yoga, I learn and improve myself every time I do a class (sometimes part of my yoga journey is accepting what I cannot do), be it when I am teaching or when I am the participant.

The Benefits
The benefits of taking regular exercise can’t be talked about enough.  Yoga is great for stretching toning and giving a ‘whole’ body workout.  It seems that many who do cardio type sports and activities rarely make time to stretch properly.  The truth is that by adding a little Yoga to your weekly workout plan your regular exercise will benefit too.  Here are a few of the proven Yoga benefits

  • Improved posture
  • Increased flexibility
  • Maintain healthy joints
  • Gain strength
  • Increase lung capacity
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved balance , prevent falls
  • Stress relief
  • Improve back pain

By improving your strength and increasing muscle length your abilities in other activities are improved too, including being less prone to injury. Increasing your lung capacity through breathing exercises can also have positive effects on respiratory conditions such as Asthma (although I do advise that you speak to your doctor first).  Increased lung capacity means more oxygen intake that that can only be a good thing , right?  Of course if Yoga is your only exercise routine by adding in a good sun salutation routine then the cardiovascular is covered too.

So don’t feel scared to try Yoga after all you can take out of it whatever you choose to.  Please don’t hesitate to ask me any questions whatever may be concerning you.  With Yoga there is always an answer and you never know that answer may surprise you.
